Henry Mintzberg recently observed that the west has an obsession with heroic leadership which "has created a wedge of disconnection between leaders and everyone else." Tom Peters' list of leadership qualities certainly covers a wide territory. We are tempted to adore his leaders as enlightened, wise, and almost superhuman.
We may recall that Mr. Peters is a prolific writer who co-authored several other books in addition to "In Search of Excellence" including "A Passion for Excellence" and "Thriving on Chaos." Is it any coincidence that Mr. Peters' company, The Tom Peters Group, has been offering leadership development courses since the 1980s and is doing quite well financially?
To complete Mr. Peters' unfinished sonata I suggest for opus #49 Napoleon's commentary .... "A leader is a dealer in hope."
