    Hello, Jossariann!

Thank you for thoughtful comments about the Kao case. Sorry for this delay and for problems language sometimes causes. Ill try to answer briefly in Ukrainian soon, but for now I look forward to your continued patience.

First of all, why we chose Kaos Business Conduct Guidelines as a case for MCUa. I think Kao is an excellent example of corporate success AND value maximization for multiple stakeholders an important case of best practices for other companies and organizations to consider in their change efforts. We wanted to introduce some of the principles behind this success which, I believe, accurately demonstrate the thinking of this company. In other words, I think theres enough evidence to suggest that Kao really does much of what it says it does.

There are several reasons for this. Our case mentioned only a few facts from Kaos corporate history. Maybe some additional information will help our readers better understand Kaos example and the companys thinking. We are adding this information (in English language for now) as Notes to the Kao case.

Clearly, Im not qualified to discuss cultural or historical reasons for skepticism. My goal for offering this Kao case was to suggest examples of best practices and lessons to be learned by organizations who want to develop and who are trying to change positively.

Naturally, there are different ways to interpret the past. Theres a discussion (and disagreement!) exactly about this theme using the past to move forward on MCUa, Adaptive Change: Whats Essential and Whats Expendable (January 14, 2004). The discussion is about where the new comes from. More specifically, its a discussion between 2 professionals about different ways to see the future through the lens of past experiences and through intuition. In other words, what to keep and what to throw away. Maybe this will be interesting for you.

Again, I think the main message behind the Kao case is that company values and a value maximization strategy for many stakeholders can coexist. They work well together. Kaos principle is that Everybody is a client.

I hope that a summary in Ukrainian language in the next few days will be a little helpful, and most of alla lot shorter!

    Best regards,
    Ludmila Matiash
