About the Role
As a Customs Clearance Specialist at Transam Carriers Inc., your primary responsibility is to ensure the timely and compliant movement of freight across the U.S.-Canada border. This includes preparing, submitting, and managing customs documentation, ensuring accuracy in classification (HS codes), and proactively addressing clearance issues to avoid delays, penalties, or disruptions in the supply chain.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect customs documents from drivers, brokers, and internal teams
- Verify commercial invoices, bills of lading, and other customs documents for accuracy and compliance
- Prepare and submit customs entries via EDI or directly to customs brokers
- Classify goods using appropriate Harmonized System (HS) codes
- Track shipments and resolve holds, delays, or compliance issues with CBSA or CBP
- Coordinate with load brokers, customs brokers, dispatchers, and drivers
- Maintain organized records of customs documentation for audits and reporting
- Generate periodic reports on customs activities, issues, and resolution times
RequirementsHard Skills:
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams, etc.)
- Experience with customs software/portals (ACE, ACI, EDI systems preferred)
- Ability to analyze documentation and resolve discrepancies quickly
- Familiarity with U.S. and Canadian customs clearance procedures
Soft Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent time management and attention to detail
- Problem-solving mindset with the ability to work under pressure
- Dependable, proactive, and collaborative in a remote or hybrid team environment
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education preferred
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a customs, logistics, or freight-related role
- English: Upper-intermediate level (B2 or higher)
- Typing speed: Minimum 40 WPM
Schedule: Mon-Fri — 9am — 5pm Toronto time
Salary: 900 USD — start; +100 USD after a 3-month trial period
